When Hubs was deployed overseas a few years ago, I had the very good luck to have his sister living nearby. And, every Wednesday night, we had Spaghetti Night. It was easy, yummy and quickly became a family thing, even after Hubs returned home.
Despite several attempts at bribing, cajoling and otherwise browbeating, M2 never joined in the fun. She may have let the equivalent of one spaghetti noodle slip past her lips in the few times we'd successfully talked her into 'trying' the spaghetti.
Whatever.
Eventually, she would eat some bread and then later garlic bread.
More spaghetti for the rest of us.
Tonight, I finally have both my girls under the same roof for the first time since before the 4th. I decided we'd try to have a good, organized week so I made out a meal plan with some of their favorites. Before bed, I had M1 read it out loud to see if it would be okay.
Monday: chicken drumsticks (Yea!!! The peasants rejoiced)
Tuesday: hot ham and au gratin potatoes (YEA!!! )
Wednesday: Spaghetti Night with garlic bread (YEA!!!)
Both girls cheered? M1 said, "What?! You like spaghetti?!"
"Naw. She's cheering for garlic bread." I interjected.
"Oh, okay." M1 said.
"No!" M2 said. "I tried it at Fazoli's and I like it."
"WHAT?!" M1 and I said, incredulous.
M2 went on to explaing that when she was with my sister and her family, they stopped at a Fazoli's on the way to the water park and she tried spaghetti. Not only did she try it, but she ate it and liked it.
Of course, this could mean she only like Fazoli's sauce which will cause her to shun any other kind of spaghetti. This will also mean I will have to likely make a meatless marinara sauce for her (easy enough) to try ours.
But, for a brief, shining moment, I can rest in the fantasy that Spaghetti Night could truly be universal for the entire troop at Ft. W.
Yes.
Miracles do happen.
[Oh, and P.S.: The theme for July blogging is "routines." This is definitely a family routine for us.]
Just happened here too - a two year old who has not touched a veg or fruit since the gerber jar ate a plate full of fresh mixed berries at brunch yesterday - who are you, child??

I always think it's funny when kids don't like typical kid food. My brother didn't like pizza. What teenage boy hates pizza? It was baffling...
